Fridays: Sask Party News Dump Day
The latest being a botched attempt to snuff out the gun-toting Jeremy Harrison fiasco.
It’s a treasured weekly tradition: the Sask Party’s Friday News Dump.
Despite what the apostrophe suggests, this crudely named strategy does not just belong to the Sask Party. For generations it’s been used, typically by governments and politicians, to dump a piece of unsavory, but inescapable information into a newsroom on a Friday, under the guise of the highest likelihood of reaching the fewest people.
That strategy doesn’t really work anymore, because it’s not 2003.
Today the majority of Canadians consume news digitally, via social media or other platforms. That’s why the moment a newsroom receives an unsavoury bit of information, reporters post it online first, then write a story about it.
