In 2018, maybe Canadian junior hockey secrets were a little easier to keep.

On the night of June 18, 2018, I was on a flight to Las Vegas with Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash survivors and their families. We had all met at the Calgary airport before Air Canada flew everybody to Vegas for the 2018 NHL Awards.

It was the first time most of the survivors had seen each other since that terrible night. It was heartwarming, poignant and sad, watching them maneuver what may have been the first bit of joy they experienced in months, while trying not to focus on who wasn’t there, or the new and undeniably different ways they were going to live their lives.

On June 19, 2018, crash survivors and their families spent the day in the back rooms of a Vegas hotel, meeting, greeting and receiving much-deserved support from NHL superstars, celebrities (sport and Hollywood) and executives from other levels of hockey governance.

At the time, though, I have to say I remember thinking something seemed a bit off with the suits.
