It’s a tradition I look forward to twice a year: the Rise of the Backbenchers in the Saskatchewan Legislature.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the trainwreck that is Question Period, where the only Sask Party MLAs who speak are cabinet ministers. In the spring, however, the Saskatchewan government delivers its budget and in the fall it delivers a Throne Speech, both followed by weeks of Sask Party backbenchers getting their moment to shine when they rise in the House to give their “response”.
It’s a biannual exercise in navel-gazing that also tends to deliver some jaw-dropping moments, because it’s the only time those backbenchers get to feel important and get their name into the record. Most of them like to make the best of the opportunity when it arises.
So, let’s see what they brought.
