“Earlier this month, a charter flight of 350 Afghan refugees landed in Saskatoon, with 221 staying in Saskatchewan.” - CBC, November 13, 2022
Surprised?
It certainly took me aback when I read that line in this CBC story dated November 13, 2022.
We knew Afghan residents who escaped the Taliban had arrived in Saskatchewan at the end of August, including the remaining Marefat High School students from Kabul. If you’re not familiar with that story, I highly recommend this beautiful piece written earlier this year by Leisha Grebinski.
I heard nothing about this recent flight from Afghanistan. That might be because it is impossible to hear anything over the constant din of Scott Moe and Jeremy Harrison congratulating themselves for their heroic efforts for Ukraine.
The sharp contrast between Saskatchewan’s reception and treatment of a flight of Afghan refugees versus those of “displaced” Ukrainians is obvious and harmful. It will haunt Saskatchewan history books for generations.
The glaring discrimination is shamefully, unavoidably on display right now and no one in Saskatchewan is saying a thing.
